In most sports, staggered positioning is usually seen as a disadvantage. However, in doubles pickleball, it can be a strategic move to incorporate more frequently into your games. Staggering occurs when one teammate moves forward to the NVZ line while the other stays back near the baseline. This tactic is particularly effective when one player executes a strong or aggressive third-shot drop, allowing their partner to advance to the kitchen line. 🎾🤝

Spacing between two players can either create or limit opportunities – not just for the opposing team, but for your team as well. 🏓

Leave too much space and your opponents can hit an easy putaway or force you to reach for the next shot. A lot of popups happen due to players reaching. But when you don't leave enough space, you limit your range, making it harder to get to balls down the sideline. You can also encroach on your partner and end up clanking paddles or knocking one another over. 🎾🤦‍♂️

But what if we could test it? Well, we do have such a vehicle and that is the shuffle draft event. Recently, APP had a shuffle draft event. It was interesting, but of course the level of play was not on the level of PPA play. How about if we do a PPA shuffle draft event? 🎾🔥

During the last #APP event, the tour tested a brand new fun event on Sunday 🏅.

16 men and 16 women were placed into four pods of four gender doubles. Each pod had a round-robin style event, with the two winners advancing to the next round. Every player played with and against every other player, with three games to 21 and rally scoring deciding the winners of each pod. It was exciting for fans to see different partnerships and matchups that they wouldn’t have seen otherwise 🤩.

When your partner gives you an open hand ✋ at the kitchen line, they're telling you to switch! This means after you return the serve 🎾, they'll slide to cover the open spot in the kitchen 🏓, and you should run up to their side 🏃‍♀️.

The rule of X is a great rule for intermediate players, who struggle to figure out who takes the middle! While conventional pickleball wisdom suggests the forehand always takes the middle, this is NOT true.

Of course, there are situations and partnerships where you might not want to use the rule of X, but it provides a good base-level understanding of who takes the middle in pickleball.

JW Johnson is allegedly playing the APP Sacramento, while his normal men's doubles partner isn't! But perhaps we will see Dylan Frazier in future APP tourneys, along with some of JW's training partners and friends like Gabriel Tardio and Federico Staksrud.

This comes as the MLP still hasn't figured out its direction, schedule, etc. in 2024. All the pros they signed at the end of 2023 for 2024-2026 are in limbo!
